The Integrated Control Surge Device (ICSD) is intended to provide surge protection for the system in case of lightning strikes. It is connected between the two-wire path and the electrode serves as a grounding rod or grounding plate.

In the presence of surge energy, it shoots the energy to the ground electrode. An ICSD can be located either next to a valve-in-head rotor or in-live valve, providing accessibility for required maintenance.
